NATURAL MATERNITY AND FERTILITY THERAPIES
Research suggests that the health of a newborn baby is strongly influenced by the health of the mother during her pregnancy. Nowadays women are becoming aware of this, together with the influence of both parents' health at the time of conception. Reflexology and Aromatherapy are popular complementary therapies which can assist with pre-conception, pregnancy and birthing.
In the UK Dr. Gowri Motha, Ms Zia Rowji and Dr. Jane McGrath have conducted substantial research into reflexology and pregnancy. n 1988, they carried out a study into the effects of reflexology on labour. 37 pregnant women who completed a course of ten treatments had an average first stage of 5 hours (compared to textbook figures of 16 to 24 hours) and 16 minute 2nd stage (compared to 1 to 2 hours). To read further concerning the safety of reflexology and 'The Gentle Birth Method' click here.
Pre-Conception
It is important for all body systems to be balanced to increase health and well being, thus providing the best possible environment for conception. Men as well as women can benefit from gentle pressure to the reflex points helping to balance hormones and stimulate the reproductive organs.
The Association of Reflexologists suggests that reflexology can actively benefit couples who are having difficulty conceiving - this includes those who are receiving IVF infertility treatments.
Pregnancy
During pregnancy both reflexology and aromatherapy can help alleviate imbalances such as:
# indigestion and heartburn
# constipation
# fluid retention
# bladder weakness
# backache
# insomnia and sleep problems.

Birth
It is desirable to have as natural a birthing as possible. Some midwives train in these therapies - others may recommend them as the Estimated Delivery Date approaches. Reflexology, in particular, can help induce labour for women who have passed their due date, provide pain relief and co-ordinate and accelerate regular contractions. Pinpointing some special massage acupressure points may also speed delivery.
Post Natal
And once baby is born reflexology has been shown to be effective for alleviating:
# engorged breasts
# sleeping difficulties
# stress and anxiety
and to increase energy levels.
